01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Amakara-ya, a Japanese confectionery shop in Katsushika Ward's Nishi-Kameari district, the immediate draw is mitarashi dango grilled to order. Emerging with fragrant charred spots, the skewered rice dumplings are remarkably tender and generously coated in glossy, sweet-and-savory soy glaze. Handed over warm in their paper wrap, they are as delightful eaten on the spot as they are taken home for an afternoon pause.
Another mainstay is the nama-cream daifuku, which wraps sweet bean paste and smooth dairy cream inside a pillowy mochi skin. Kept chilled in the case, it comes in classic varieties as well as flavors such as coffee. Letting the sweet sit briefly at room temperature until semi-thawed releases a luxurious contrast between the cool cream and the refined sweetness of the tender wrapper.
Depending on the day, the storefront may also display rustic kusa dango infused with the herbal aroma of mugwort, sakura mochi filled with smooth koshian, and freshly steamed festive red rice (osekihan). Paired with warm neighborhood service, these classic treats make the shop an easy place to drop into during everyday errands.
